FORT WORTH -- Austin Covalt, 79, passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, in Fort Worth.
Memorial service: Was held Saturday in Russell, Kan. A private family interment will be held in Fort Worth in Greenwood Memorial Park at a later date.
Memorials: James L. West Alzheimer's Center, 1111 Summit Ave., Fort Worth, Texas 76102; or Trinity United Methodist Church, 221 N. Maple St., Russell, Kan. 67665.
Austin was born April 19, 1935, in Modesto, Calif., to Harold Austin Covalt and Margaret Faye Highfill Covalt and grew up in Woodward, Okla. He attended Wichita State University on a football scholarship where he met the love of his life, LaRue Sibley. On April 19 they celebrated 57 years of marriage. Austin touched many lives during his dedicated career as an educator both academically and as a mentor for young athletes. Whether it was during his 37 years as teacher and guidance counselor, nine years of coaching, or his 30-plus years officiating, Austin was a fair man, a humble man, and a man of great integrity. His friends were friends for a lifetime and nothing was more precious to him than his family.
In 1967, LaRue and Austin chose to raise their family in Russell, Kan., and this is where they made their home until Sept. 12, 2012, when Austin's progression of Alzheimer's disease brought them closer to their children and grandchildren by moving to Fort Worth. Together, as a family, the decision was prayerfully made to donate Austin's brain to The Brain Bank program at UNTHSC for the specific benefit of Alzheimer's research.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Allen Covalt; and sister, Phyllis Beadles.
Survivors: Wife of 57 years, LaRue Covalt of Fort Worth; daughters, Ann Clinkscales and husband, Jim, of Fort Worth, Sue Nevius and husband, Scott, of Valencia, Calif.; son, David Covalt of Arlington; grandsons, Baird Clinkscales of Richmond, Va., and Austin Clinkscales of New Orleans, La.; niece, Stephanie Chapman; and nephews, Greg Covalt, Jason Covalt, Geoff Covalt, Grant Beadles, Justin Beadles and their families.
