GRANBURY -- Ellen "Scooter" Johnson, 86, died Thursday, July 3, 2014, from respiratory failure, due to her long battle with dementia.
Graveside service: 3 p.m. Tuesday in Greenwood Memorial Park, with Stan Denman officiating. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Greenwood.
Ellen "Scooter" Johnson was born on March 23, 1928, in Plainview, the daughter of Robert and Carrie Bell Christian Johnson. She graduated from Paschal High School. She then went on to receive a bachelor's degree from TCU and a master's degree from North Texas in physical education.
Ellen then went on to have an accomplished career as a teacher and coach in high school girls' sports, including golf, softball, volleyball, track and basketball. She began coaching the Brewer High School's Girls' Basketball Team and won back-to-back district championships in 1962 and 1963. The 1963 team was inducted into the Brewer High Hall of Fame in 2012. Ellen also played on a women's softball league in the 1960s, the Fort Worth Rebels, where they went on to play in championship games in China and Mexico, just to name a couple. They won the Mexico championship game, where Ellen was both player and coach.
Ellen was preceded in death by two sisters, Sybil Leal Johnson, Noralee Christian Guhl; brother, Grady Johnson; her mother and father, Robert Johnson and Carrie Bell Christian; and stepfather, Robert Christian.
Survivors: She is survived by nieces, Annette Mays, Tina Chapman, Gina Crocker; nephews, Richard Guhl and Russell Guhl; six great-nieces; five great-nephews; one great-great-nephew; and one great-great-niece.
