Warren was born July 25, 1934, on the family homestead in Precinct 1, Kerr County, to Albert and Katie Striegler Schellhase, and was the fifth of their five sons. He was preceded in death by his parents and two elder brothers, James and Marion.
Warren served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1977, first as an enlisted man, then, upon graduation from the University of Texas, as a commissioned officer beginning in 1958. He was selected by the Navy for graduate studies in Middle Eastern history and international law at American University in Washington, D.C., where he earned his master's of science. He proudly served his country for 26 years in the Middle East, Vietnam, Cuba and other places around the globe, and retired from the service in 1977.
